CHARACTER MATTERS: VALUES AND VIRTUES What’s the project about… For years parents and teachers discussed whether or not to teach values in schools. Since parents, teachers and society recognize that students have to be able to distinguish right from wrong character education programs have sprouted around the world. Character education is the teaching of core values. For example the six teachable “pillars of character”: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Good character education means cultivating virtues through formation of good habits. Children need to learn through actions that honesty and compassion are good, and that deceit and cruelty are bad. Adults in schools and parents should strive to be models of good character. Character education is most effective when it is spread throughout regular school courses. After the transnational meeting in Germany we started selecting students for the mobilities. We offered all the first year students of our school to apply, we introduced the project to them and we got about 30 applications. We decided to select students from different backgrounds, both from academic and vocational studies and those who were very open minded.
ResponderEliminarWe had our first meeting the the choosen students for the mobility to Portugal in the end of February. We took a group photo and worked on the first activity which was about getting to know each other. The students were posting photos connected to their hobbies and then seperetly gave a description of themselves and were then supposed to connect other students with their photos.
ResponderEliminarIn our next meeting we intoduced the activity about the virtues we were working on, gratitude and joy. Here is a description of the activity:
ResponderEliminarGratitute journal
Each day before bed write 3-5 things you are grateful for and why (one sentence is enough) but don't write the same things every day. Summarize how keeping this journal made you feel and tell the others what you are most grateful for. Add visuals to your texts. Maybe a drawing or photo ;-) Use license free or even better your own pictures. Feel free to react to each others posts. Always be polite and respect the netiquette!
The students posted their journals and it was very inspiring to read :)
As a part of the project we decided to have our students take the personality test called 16 personalities, both the students chosen for the mobility and all of our first year students who are in total about 200 students and work with their character strengths. It was very inspiring to see how they realized what their character strengths are and how they can work with them.
ResponderEliminarOne of the first activities we will all do is taking the character tests. Knowing our strenghts and weaknesses can have a positive impact on our lives. But very often we don´t even know what our virtues are. Let´s find out together and discuss the results on the padlet. Both tests are free and it´s not necessary to register with your real e-mail address.

As a part of identifying virtues we had our students track their emotions and make a graphic description of them. It surprised them to see it this clearly how their mood and emotions varied and we had a good discussion about how to manage our emotions.
